Aquatic Therapy

75% of participants in one aquatic program reported less pain and joint stiffness and greater physical function, quality of life, and hip muscle strength.
(Physical Therapy, January 2007)
Performax offers individual aquatic therapy, group classes, and open swim sessions in our on-site, 92 warm water pool. Aquatic therapy provides our patients relief from symptoms of a variety of arthritic and musculoskeletal injuries, and helps them improve their function and balance.  The pool provides an environment that can safely challenge a patient's limitations and stability without the consequence of falling.  The water buoyancy decreases weight bearing on joints and decreases swelling (edema), making aquatic therapy an excellent tool for restoring range of motion after surgery or injury.  It is also one of the best forms of therapy for those suffering from chronic pain, arthritis, joint replacement, fibromyalagia, and various orthopedic injuries.
          Benefits of Aquatic Therapy include:
      • Decreased weight bearing on joints
      • Slowed bone density loss
      • Decreased swelling
      • Increased safety
      • Increased balance
      • Cardiac conditioning for patients with poor tollerance to land exercise
      • Reduced impact of arthritis and fibromyalagia*

*Performax offers the Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program:
The Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program (AFAP) is a water exercise program created by the Arthritis Foundation for people with arthritis and related conditions.  Participants will be encouraged to work at a level that is comfortable for them.  Classes are conducted by trained, AFAP-certified instructors and are designed to improve flexibility, joint range of motion, endurance, strength and daily function, and to decrease pain.  Warm water exercise can also result in improved sleep and overall quality of life!  [For more information about this program, contact the Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program.]
